Halloween is usually about candy and costumes, but one Houston Heights resident is adding another kind of treat this year: free supplies for neighbors who need a little extra help.

For the second year, Marcy McQueen has hosted a Halloween pantry at 1010 W. Temple with nonperishable food, ready-to-eat meals, personal hygiene products, baby food and pet food.

The pantry is open to anyone who needs the supplies, with no questions asked. Donations are also welcome, according to McQueen.

The effort began last year in response to disruptions to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits during the federal government shutdown. The pantry provided a way for neighbors to support families facing food insecurity and other challenges.

This year, the McQueen is bringing the effort back alongside the home’s traditional Halloween candy giveaway, which will also include allergy-friendly treats for children.

Though the pantry is planned for Halloween night, McQueen said she has a backup plan to distribute supplies Sunday if rain prevents them from setting everything out Saturday.
