The Latest on the Nicholson water line project

Work is continuing on a roughly $25.6 million water infrastructure project that has closed portions of Nicholson Street in the Heights.

More than 60 people recently voted for an update on the project, which is replacing approximately 18,000 feet of large-diameter water lines in the area.

Nicholson remains closed in one direction in some areas as construction continues. Some residents have also reported seeing drivers traveling the wrong way through the construction area.

The project is intended to increase water availability, improve water circulation and enhance fire protection for homes, businesses and schools in and around City Council District C, as well as portions of Districts A and I, according to the city.

The city is also rehabilitating existing water mains before they fail, rather than waiting for breaks or leaks to occur.

Where the project stands

The city provided an update in early September, saying construction is progressing well.

Crews have completed installation of the new water line along Nicholson between 19th and 24th streets, and connections are now underway.

Work is expected to continue along Nicholson between 25th and 28th streets. Construction is also getting underway along 18th, 19th and 20th streets.

Despite the ongoing construction and road closures, the city says the project remains on schedule for completion in fall 2027.

That means residents and drivers should expect construction and traffic impacts in the area to continue as work moves into its next phases.

The project is part of the city’s broader effort to rehabilitate aging water infrastructure and improve the reliability and capacity of the system as the area continues to grow.
